If at any time you have a concern about your pregnancy or think you are in labor, please call the office main number 312-775-1100. During office hours our clinical staff will answer any questions and determine if you need to be evaluated at the office or in the hospital. After hours we have a LIVE answering service that will take all your information and page the doctor on call. Please do not leave a message after hours. If at anytime you have an after hours emergency and cannot reach the office answering service please call Labor and Delivery at Prentice Women's Hospital 312-472-0800 and they will assist you.

- You are experiencing painful contractions and you are less than 37 weeks
- You are over 37 weeks and are having regular painful contractions that last 30-60 seconds and are every 5 minutes for at least one hour
- You have experienced leaking of fluid like your water bag has broken-with or without the presence of contractions
- You are concerned about the baby’s movement
- You are having bright red vaginal bleeding
For a low risk pregnancy, your prenatal visits will be every four weeks until 32 weeks (8 months). Then we will see you every two weeks. Starting at 36 weeks, we will see you weekly until your baby is born. The visits that we recommend bringing your partner are the following:
–Pregnancy consult done with Nurse Practitioner (usually between 5-6 weeks)
–First prenatal visit (ideally between 8-10 weeks)
–20 weeks (when a full anatomy ultrasound of the baby is performed)
–36 weeks (we review labor instructions and discuss delivery)
Most appointments will be scheduled as 15 minute appointments. Exceptions to this are the following:
–Pregnancy consult done with Nurse Practitioner (usually between 5-6 weeks)
–First prenatal visit (ideally between 8-10 weeks)
–20 weeks (when a full anatomy ultrasound of the baby is performed)
–36 weeks (we review labor instructions and discuss delivery)
Most appointments will be scheduled as 15 minute appointments. Exceptions to this are the following:
- First prenatal visit: This visit includes a review of the “do’s and don’ts” of pregnancy that were already discussed with the Nurse Practitioner at your pregnancy consult visit, an ultrasound, a discussion of chromosomal and genetic testing counseling, and prenatal lab work.
- 20 weeks: The anatomy ultrasound usually takes 30-45 minutes in order to obtain all images necessary. Please do not bring any young children to this appointment if possible. You will have an appointment immediately following to review the ultrasound.
- 24 weeks: The testing for gestational diabetes is done during the visit.
If you have twins, your schedule of appointments is slightly different. Starting at 16 weeks (4 months), you will have visits every 2 weeks and starting at 28 weeks will generally be every week. This is because of the higher risks these pregnancies pose.
During your obstetrical visits, we will make an effort to ensure that you get to meet all the physicians in the practice, since any one of us may be privileged to deliver your baby. However, we do make sure that you are “touching base” with your primary physician at least once a trimester, and more frequently in the month before your due date.
We understand that your time is important, especially when you will be having between 10-12 appointments during the course of your pregnancy. We do our best to make sure that our schedules run on time. On the same token, we would appreciate your promptness for your appointments, and if you believe you may be delayed, please call us as soon as possible so we can accommodate you. There are rare times when extra time needs to be spent with a complicated patient and we may have you see a different doctor/nurse practitioner so that you do not have to wait.

The following is a list of pediatricians that we recommend. Keep in mind that if you have an insurance plan which limits your choice of physicians, it is up to you to determine if a pediatrician is covered by your plan. Each newborn must have a pediatrician assignment. If your pediatrician is not on staff at Northwestern, we will be happy to assist you in choosing a pediatrician for your baby’s initial hospital exam.
